The Wallraf shows how modern and relevant European art from the 13th to the beginning of the 20th century was and still is. In the medieval collection visitors can admire the world-famous "Muttergottes in der Rosenlaube" (Madonna in the Rose Bower) by Stefan Lochner. On the second floor the great Flemish painter Peter Paul Rubens and the most important Dutch artist Rembrandt van Rijn are an impressive attraction. The third floor is devoted to Germany's most comprehensive collection of Impressionists.
Drawn by Light. Camille Corot and his ‘Cliché-Verre’ Experiments

The beginning of this exhibition series will be marked by a long look at a special artistic technique – a method of reproduction that can be assigned neither to graphic art nor to photography in the true sense of the words: the cliché-verre technique. Literally meaning “glass picture”, cliché-verre was a popular method between 1850 and 1870 – not least among French landscape painters such as Camille Corot and Charles-Francois Daubigny – of employing light-sensitive paper to duplicate pastoral landscapes drawn on glass. Purely with the help of the light, a drawing scratched into a specially coated glass plate could be transferred to the paper. In some ways cliché-verre marked “the zero point” in the graphic arts during the second half of the 19th century. Further exhibitions on other reproductive techniques will follow.

Werkstatt-Gespräch anlässlich der Ausstellung „Von Licht gezeichnet. Das cliché verre“. Gemeinsam veranstaltet mit der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
Jede graphische Sammlung bewahrt eine Vielzahl von zeichnerischen und graphischen Arbeiten auf, denen der Kunstwerk-Charakter im strengen Sinne abgesprochen wird. Es handelt sich um Abklatsche, Pausen oder Lichtspuren, die auf rein mechanischem Wege, scheinbar ohne künstlerische Intention, ausgeführt wurden oder gar ohne jedes menschliche Zutun entstanden sind. Auch das cliché verre wird als Zeichnung der Natur oder des Lichts aufgefasst. In einem Werkstatt-Gespräch sollen diese kleinen und unspektakulären Erscheinungen auf Papier vorgestellt und als ästhetische Randerscheinungen mit der hohen Kunst der Graphik und Zeichnung konfrontiert werden.
Dr. Thomas Ketelsen ist seit dem 1. April 2010 Leiter der Graphischen Sammlung im Wallraf.
Auf Leben und Tod. A matter of life and death - Man in painting and photography

The Teutloff Collection on tour at the Wallraf Helmut Newton and J.A.D. Ingres, Nan Goldin and François Boucher, Herlinde Koelbl and Wilhelm Leibl, Jack Pierson and Barthel Bruyn – these are just four of the roughly forty unusual encounters that the Wallraf will be staging. Masterpieces from the Cologne gallery of paintings will be juxtaposed with outstanding photographs from the TEUTLOFF PHOTO + VIDEO COLLECTION. The exhibition will move between the existential extremes of birth and death, happiness and sorrow, anxiety and hope. The juxtaposition of photographic art and painting is both stunning and instructive as it provides visitors with information on how the classical pictorial formulae of the old masters have exerted their influence on works of art to the present day. Photography deliberately exploits, quotes and parodies painting. At the same time, this more recent art medium has developed new forms to capture the changing image of man. Topics such as physical awareness and sexual identity are discussed in a matter-of-fact way. These explicit representations would have been unthinkable in traditional painting. The exhibition comprises nine “chapters” which unfold a moving panorama of the “condition humaine”. The journey takes visitors from the cradle to the grave – and back to rebirth.

Vortrag: Mark Z. Danielewski: The Hopeless Animal and The End of Nature (in engl. Sprache)
Die Frage des Menschheits-Dilemmas „Raum“ wird in der Nomenklatur des Natürlichen angegangen, genauer: mittels Positionierung des Tieres als Partner, Gegenspieler, Anekdote, Dozent, Projektionsfläche, Allegorie, Stellvertreter, Gefäß, Wächter, Differenz, das Gleichgültige, Notwendigkeit, Gefangener, Gottheit, Chiffre und schließlich als das unausdenkend Menschliche. Daraus ergibt sich selbstverständlich eine breite Themenpalette: von der emotionalen Topographie von Furcht und Hoffnung über selbstgemachte Oberflächen des Verneinens bis hin zu Nacktheit, Pelzfetischismus, mechanisierter Begleitung – aber auch mittelalterlichen Bestiarien, Zoos, der Haustier-Industrie (ganz zu schweigen von bildgewordenen Idyllen, Tierfotografie und drolligen Kreaturen auf youtube). Aufmerksame Seitenblicke fallen auf Denker wie Walton Ford, Giorgio Agamben, Valentino Braitenberg, Temple Grandin und vielleicht Cesar Milan. Ob Danielewski es tatsächlich schafft, all das zu einem kohärenten Ganzen zusammen zu ziehen, bleibt vorerst unklar. Vor allem, da dieses Ganze natürlich auch Themenbereiche wie synthetische Intelligenz, spekulative Fiktion und die Architektur des Schicksals umfassen muss. Trotzdem wird er am Ende des Vortrages vielleicht deutlich gemacht haben, warum – bei einer Betrachtung des menschlichen Raum-Dilemmas unter tierischem Aspekt – die Natur jetzt notwendigerweise an ein Ende gelangt. Möglicherweise dient ihm das Alles aber auch nur als pompöse Ausrede, um über seine Katze zu sprechen.
Mark Z. Danielewski (* 1966) ist ein US-amerikanischer Schriftsteller und Denker, der vor allem mit seinem Kultroman „House of Leaves“ zu internationaler Berühmtheit gelangt ist.
Das Gedächtnis, die Stadt und die Kunst: die Beschneidung (memory, city and art: circumcision)

The Wallraf is currently in a focal position: in the immediate vicinity of the museum, archaeologists are excavating the old Jewish quarter after centuries of neglect. The museum’s contribution is a small-scale exhibition of prints on the Jewish ritual of circumcision. Unusual representations of the “Circumcision of Christ” by Dürer, Goltzius and Rembrandt strikingly illustrate the Christian re-interpretation and glorification of the Jewish ritual. It is only the interpretation of his circumcision as Christ’s “blood sacrifice” that makes this ritual worthy of representation in western art.
