Titian and Tintoretto in print graphics – art, business strategy, commerce

The two most famous painters of Venice in the 16th century – Titian and Tintoretto – deliberately used print graphics for the purpose of reproducing their painting motifs. Like local woodcutters such as Niccolò Boldrini Titian was in close contact with the copperplate engraver Cornelis Cort, who reproduced a large number of his works, among them “The Martyrdom of St Lawrence”, with great skill. However, the paintings of Tintoretto were made famous beyond Venice in masterly prints by Agostino Carracci. The woodcuts and copperplate engravings shown in the exhibition are evidence of the calculated strategy designed to spread the fame of the two artists more widely by means of the artistic quality of the print reproductions and thus guarantee their market value.

The diplomat from Venice. Tintoretto’s portrait of Paolo Tiepolo

The cabinet presentation in the first room of the Baroque Section presents a new permanent loan from the Federal Government; the hitherto unknown life-size portrait of the important Venetian statesman Paolo Tiepolo (1523-1585). This recently restored work by Jacopo Tintoretto (1519-1594) is shown in the context of other Venetian Renaissance paintings from the collection of the Wallraf. Other exhibits illumine the one-time function of the sumptuously framed painting as decoration in the office of Federal Chancellor Willy Brandt. A smaller copy of the painting from a private collection will also be on loan. It probably served as a bridge between the official state portrait and several other portraits of Paolo Tiepolo.

This show continues the series of exhibitions at the Wallraf in which in the most varied of ways photography and painting were confronted with each other: “Hotel California” (2007) and “Auf Leben und Tod” (2010/2011). In co-operation with the Photographische Sammlung/SK Stiftung Kultur in Cologne a dialogue was created between two masters of the human portrait - Wilhelm Leibl (1844-1900) and August Sander (1876-1964), whose biographies are closely linked with Cologne. There are many different points of contact and links between the work of these two artists in their motifs and in aspects of technique and aesthetics.

Fortbildung: Von Mensch zu Mensch. Wilhelm Leibl & August Sander (LF)
Mit dieser Schau, die auf unterschiedlichste Weise Fotografie und Malerei gegenüberstellt, wurde ein Dialog zwischen zwei Meistern des Menschenbildes erarbeitet: Wilhelm Leibl (1844-1900) und August Sander (1876-1964). Die Ausstellung wirft Fragen auf, die in besondere Situationen der Lebenswirklichkeit führen und auf eindringliche Weise den Standpunkt des eigenen Ichs reflektieren lassen.

Vortrag: Im Wettstreit der Künste – Wilhelm Leibl und August Sander
Zwei Kurzvorträge anlässlich der Ausstellung „Von Mensch zu Mensch. Wilhelm Leibl & August Sander“. Gemeinsam veranstaltet von den Freunden und der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
Dr. Götz Czymmek – als Kurator des Wallraf – hält einen Vortrag zu „Leibl und die Fotografie“. Und Fotografie bedeutete für den realistisch arbeitenden Porträtmaler des 19. Jahrhunderts zugleich Hilfe und Konkurrenz. Auch Wilhelm Leibl hat sich der Fotografie bedient. Dies erstaunt zunächst, denn der Maler war berühmt für seine Abhängigkeit vom Modell. Es fragt sich also, welche Funktion ein Foto für Leibl haben konnte. Diente es ihm tatsächlich gelegentlich als Surrogat der lebendigen Anschauung? Half es in anderer Weise bei seinem Arbeitsprozess?
Gabriele Conrath-Scholl von der SK Stiftung Kultur spricht zu „August Sander – Von der Kunstphotographie zur Neuen Sachlichkeit“. Dem Fotografen August Sander das Porträt als zentrales Schaffensthema. Dabei beschritt er zusehends den Weg erhöhter Sachlichkeit. Vom möglichst authentischen Bild des Menschen war er fasziniert, spürte mit hohem Einfühlungsvermögen den verschiedenen Typen der Gesellschaft nach und suchte entsprechend nach unterschiedlichen Möglichkeiten der Bildumsetzung.

Vortrag: Linz am Rhein und Linz an der Donau – über Zufälle und ihre kunsthistorische Folgen
Gemeinsam veranstaltet von den Freunden und der Fritz Thyssen Stiftung.
Der Vortrag beleuchtet die „Linzer Jahre“ von August Sander und liefert gleichzeitig Einblicke in ein künstlerisches Gefüge im frühen 20. Jahrhundert in Österreich. Dabei werden die Ergebnisse eines mehrjährigen Forschungsprojektes zu Sander auch mit Fragen nach der Wirkungs- und Rezeptionsgeschichte unter besonderer Berücksichtigung von aktuellen künstlerischen Projekten gekoppelt.
Martin Hochleitner ist Direktor des Salzburg Museums sowie Professor für Kunstgeschichte und kuratorische Praxis an der Kunstuniversität Linz.
The inkblot drawing – between apprentice piece and psychoanalysis

At the centre of the exhibition there are several ink blot drawings recently acquired for the Graphische Sammlung of the Wallraf-Richartz Museum & Fondation Corboud. Leonardo da Vinci had called on young artists to seek inspiration from cloud formations for their designs. Taking up this theory of inspiration the term “Klecksographie” was invented around 1850. The natural scientist Justinus Kerner (1786-1862) and his artist friend Franz von Pocci (1807-1876) made it popular as a special drawing technique. Towards the end of the 19th century the inkblot drawing played an important role in psychoanalysis (Rorschach test). In addition to drawings from Kerner’s circle the exhibition will also show cloud studies by Johann Anton de Peters which provide an introduction to the theme of perceiving and identifying accidental forms.
