The MAKK is the only museum of its kind in North-Rhine Westphalia.

Located in the heart of Cologne, with a view of the Cathedrals twin towers, since 1989, the museum has been exhibiting its comprehensive collections from 800 years of European arts and crafts, as well as a jewellery collection going back 5,000 years. Providing a tour through the centuries, visitors can experience the artistic wealth of different eras and styles.

In 2008, the museum was able to introduce another highlight: the design section, with its focus on 20th and 21st century North American and Western European design, was considerably extended by the Prof. R.G. Winkler Collection. The exhibition concept is unique in Europe: design is not shown in isolation but presented in a dialogue with works from the fine arts, juxtaposing, for example, Mondrian and Rietveld.

The MAKKs temporary exhibitions and its diverse event programmes always draw large audiences and mirror the diversity of visitorsinterests, from architecture and photography to all areas of arts and crafts and to contemporary design.
