Museum of Applied Arts

The MAKK (Museum of Applied Arts) is the only museum of its kind in North-Rhine Westphalia. Since 1989 its extensive collection has been presented at the museum’s venue in the heart of the city with views of the cathedral spires. The collection's exhibits span 800 years of European craftsmanship and 5,000 years of jewellery. A time journey through the centuries gives an insight into the rich artistic variety of styles in different eras.

The extensive collection is the result of generous art patronage and sponsorship. The most recent highlight of the collection was opened in 2008: the Design Department with its focus on North American and European design of the 20th and 21st centuries was considerably enlarged as a result of the acquisition of the R.G. Winkler Collection.

The Design section is closed due to refurbishment actually. Please find further informations here.

Guided tour: Beautiful interiors

Choice furniture, sophisiticated technology, precious materials – the MAKK makes all your dreams of beautiful interiors from the past come alive. The tour includes furnishings and movables that are representative and typical of particular eras – from scissors chairs to Tiffany lamps. When people’s aspirations for their own home become more sophisticated, this leads to the desire to equip it with practical and attractive furniture. What these aspirations look like and how they change can be clearly seen in the development of different types of furniture and their functions, their ornamentation reflecting the prevailing taste of an era, and the materials and techniques that were the fashionable at the time.

34 x Design

October 27, 2018 to April 17, 2019

"34 x Design" brings together 34 international highlights of the MAKK's design collection in an exhibition. It reflects the change in taste and technology in nearly 100 years of design history: from Rietveld’s "Red Blue Chair" (1918) to the 3D printed "Generico Chair" from 2014.

Andy Warhol - Pop goes Art

The Cologne Museum of Applied Arts (MAKK) will be staging the first-ever exhibition of a private collection that includes almost all of Andy Warhol’s album cover designs, as well as many of his sketches and other illustrations. Featuring both videos and audio clips, the Pop goes Art exhibition will live up to its title by showcasing the interaction of art and music.

Vorschau

Grosse Oper - viel Theater? Bühnenbauten im Europäischen Vergleich

30. März bis 30. Juni 2019
