Historical Photo Archive

The historical photo archive of the museum comprises roughly 25,000 objects - mainly from Oceania, Africa, the Philippines and Indonesia. More than half of them are a gift from the estate of Georg Küppers-Loosen (1860-1910) from Cologne who had bought and taken photographs during his numerous journeys. In 1995, roughly 78,000 photographs from the well-known global traveller and photographer Hans Helfritz (1902-1995) were added to the archive.

Photographs are of great importance for the research of non-European cultures. At the same time, they highlight the European mindscape through the ages.
