In style and degree of detail, the underdrawing of the Archangel Gabriel’s face and hair resembles that of the figure of the Virgin, so that a single draughtsman may be presumed. Quite generally, the right-hand wing has fewer discrepancies between underdrawing and painting than the left-hand wing. Among the discrepancies is the direction in which the archangel is looking: in the underdrawing at the scroll in his hands, in the painting at the Virgin Mary.
