The Virgin’s head and gold casket

In the bottom left part of the Virgin’s cloak can be seen, none too clearly, a hint of a change from the first graphic lay-in. Here not only the often conspicuously broad lines of a drawing done presumably in pen, but also the form of hatching, deviate from the rest of the underdrawing of the cloak. To all appearances, these graphic indications were entered after the first paint had been applied.

To the left, below the Virgin’s cloak, visible drawn lines outside the golden casket show that it was originally planned to be in a different position (the gilding of the casket itself is impenetrable to infrared, hence no underdrawing can be seen beneath it)
