St Gereon’s leg armour

Vigorous dark lines outline the form of the leg armour only coarsely at first and beneath the right knee reveal the shape of an articulated plate (or ‘lame’) that was at first planned to be angular. On closer inspection, one can see here further lines, albeit paler and finer. In contrast to the angular form, they define round outlines of the lame with a bit of hatching to indicate shade (see red and pale blue mapping lines). As these round forms are more like the painted version than are the angular shapes indicated by the darker lines, one might presume that the fine lines belong to a second underdrawing stage to finalize or correct the composition.
